When falling asleep in this cabin, the only sound you hear is the swans down by the lake. Maybe a loon, depending on the season.
When you wake up, you might hear a snipe or a whimbrel or the old fridge, which sounds like it’s making coffee for some reason. And if you’re lucky, the actual coffee maker if someone got up before you.
Someone always gets up before me.
You turn on the radio, sip your coffee and look out the window. A glacier to the west, another one to the east… on a good day. On other days just the two lakes, nested between the endless mossy hills. Nothing moves and yet everything is moving.
I’ve been here a thousand times and it always looks different and it always feels the same. As if someone has lived here slowly and quietly for a thousand years, and so it is my duty to leave this sacred peace undisturbed. And as if I’m being embraced by my family’s love, through the care and respect they have shown this place for half a century now.
I love having people over who’ve never been here before, so I get to rediscover my favourite place in the world. Thank you for allowing me to do just that through you.
