Maybe a loon, depending on the season. When you wake up, you might hear a snipe or a whimbrel or the old fridge, which sounds like it’s making coffee for some reason. And if you’re lucky, the actual coffee maker if someone got up before you. Someone always gets up before me. You turn on the radio, sip your coffee and look out the window. A glacier to the west, another one to the east… on a good day. On other days just the two lakes, nested between the endless mossy hills. Nothing moves and yet everything is moving. I’ve been here a thousand times and it always looks different and it always feels the same. As if someone has lived here slowly and quietly for a thousand years, and so it is my duty to leave this sacred peace undisturbed. And as if I’m being embraced by my family’s love, through the care and respect they have shown this place for half a century now. I love having people over who’ve never been here before, so I get to rediscover my favourite place in the world. Growing up in a strong Icelandic choral tradition, Snorri began his career as a classical guitarist before falling in love with film music in his teens and going on to study composition at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and at Berklee College of Music. His debut solo album, ‘Orbit’, was released in 2018 — two years after he returned to Iceland having lived away in Spain and Mexico — and traces the journey of living in such vastly different environments. Nevertheless, it’s characterized by a healthy dose of Icelandic melancholy, fed with electronic undercurrents. The double EP 'Landbrot': an introspective and personal collection of instrumental pieces for piano and strings, was released in 2020-2021. Snorri’s 2nd full length album, ‘I Am Weary, Don’t Let Me Rest’ was released in June 2023 and received 3 nominations at the Icelandic Music Awards - winning 1 award for Production of the Year. In 2024, Snorri signed with renowned record label Deutsche Grammophon. His debut release with the famous yellow label was ‘Longer shadows, softer stones’, followed by ‘The Importance of Birds’ in 2025. In his music, Snorri is able to find ways to balance emotion without invoking overdramatic exuberance.
